There is a World Championship in what they call Nordic skiing here in Oslo at the moment. That means cross country and ski jumping, sports which are fairly big in a handful of countries in the Northern part of the globe but hardly get any attention elsewhere.
Anyway. This is also, of course, an excuse for parties. As Norway has grabbed more than our share of medals, it means that downtown Oslo is packed every evening. The restaurants and hotels are doing a brisk trade, but there is also an outdoor after ski area with mock Tyrolean huts serving snacks and drinks.
I passed through one afternoon before the festivities had started to check out what was on offer. There was mulled wine and aquavit, but I expected nothing but Carlsberg in the beer bar. A pleasant surprise to see the sign, then: Three beers for Nøgne Ø to toast the champions.
But there are other small signs of improvement, too. How about Jolly Pumpkin beers for sale in an Oslo supermarket? Not cheap, but I had to get one of each!
