A new part of Copenhagen is being shaped, so far mostly on the computer screens of the architects. The old Carlsberg brewery is history, and, as in any old industrial area centrally located, plans are being made for apartments, for shops and for leisure activities.
While the Carlsberg of today is not too warmly embraced by beer geeks, there is no reason to downsize the importance of the pioneers of the brewery.
There has just been a competition to name the squares and the garden of the new town. The main square will be called the Bryggernes Plads – The Brewers’ Square, honouring both J.C. and Carl Jacobsen.
But what I liked best is the name of the square just inside the main gate. Bag Elefanterne – Behind the Elephants.
